I like this device and recommend it to anyone with a compatible camera. It does basically two things: 1) simplifies the USB connection to the computer and 2) recharges the KAA2HR Kodak battery pack that comes with it. I find that it does them both well.
Even though my Kodak camera came with a USB cable and Windows XP readily recognizes the camera, it's just easier to set the camera on the dock instead of fumbling with a USB cable and port. And, before I bought my camera I had already decided that opening the battery door often for replaceable batteries might eventually break the door based on the reviews of many cameras. Using the dock to recharge the KAA2HR pack eliminates opening the battery door frequently.
I frankly cannot understand the negative comments in some of the previous reviews. Regarding the duration of the battery pack charge, well that depends on what you are doing with the camera. Video, live view, lots of pictures, flashes, etc. will run any battery down more quickly. So the previous negative comment about the charge duration of the KAA2HR is rather relative. One other previous negative comment referred to the capacity of the KAA2HR as 1600 mAh. But the one that came with my dock is 2100 mAh which is a respectable capacity for a 2-cell AA size battery pack. And it's true that the dock only charges the Kodak battery pack. The Kodak battery pack has plastic tabs on it that engage a little lever in the battery compartment of the camera. This apparently allows the camera and dock to detect when a rechargeable battery is in the camera. Otherwise, the dock would try to charge any battery in the camera - rechargeable or not (not a good thing). So actually, it's a pretty smart way to make the dock charge the rechargeable pack and not charge disposable batteries. No manufacturer could trust users to manually do that properly. I read one bad review of the battery pack in which the person actually disassembled the battery pack when he could not charge it. I rest my case.
Anyway, I have no regrets and recommend this device. |

As much as I stand behind Kodak's line of digital cameras. I donot at all recommend this dock. It is simply not practical. The only reason I own it is because it was a birthday gift. This dock is a scam, it does exactly what I think the usb adapter should have been able to do. Another thing is that it only charges the kodak brand batteries it comes with. Unless you're one of those people that just must have matching components, this item should not be on your wish list.
What to do:
For this price, you can get a pretty decent internal or usb multi-card reader (depending on your system) and Energizer rechargeables with a 30 min charger and you will still have a couple dollars left over. |
