I bought my Zire 31 mostly for school work, as an upgrade for my origonal Zire (the one with 2 megs of memory).
Of course, I'm a bit clumsy with my stuff, and a week after getting it, I ended up tripping over a power cable, causing my Zire to fly across the room, hitting the wall, then whacking a table with it's screen. Only thing that happened was the memory card popped out - Zire was as good as new. It's about six months and hundreds of drops later and the Zire still works. If you're a student, I reccomend this PDA because it has more than enough memory and processor speed to handle what you put on it (although if you want to take notes, I reccommend buying a keyboard for it), if you drop it it shouldn't break.
As an MP3 player, it does fairly well, and I've been able to get five hours of use out of the battery while playing MP3s.
The only major faults I find in the Zire 31 is the screen, which goes to mostly black in the sunlight (so you really can't use it outside) as well as is passive-matrix, so gaming isn't as good as it could be (though you can stil run them well), and the lack of WiFi support - as of yet, I haven't found anything to add WiFi or bluetooth capability for it.
All in all, it's worth the money, as if you're a student, it'll take most of what you give it. |

Do not buy unless you plan to upgrade within a year |
I too bought the Palm Zire 31 in November 2004 from Amazon. Must have been a bad batch because it died a month ago. So lasted a month more than someone who bought in the same timeframe. The warranty is only 90 days. I should have known better since all our Palms (a total of 7 -- 2 treo 600, 1 zire, 3 Palm V, 1 Palm III) have died within 2 years of use; the Treos within 6 months-- I am on the replacement right now which is blinking 'death' too.
I am so wedded to the Palm Desktop but may be forced to switch to Outlook. I am not a fancy or advanced user, just looking for something reliable. Sigh...
