Good but insuffient |
CDs & DVDs at our public library have a lot of scratches, and we would rather repair discs than replace them. This gadget works with two wheels and in four stages: (1) It cleans just fine, with the usual isopropyl alcohol, one wheel wet, one dry. A small reservoir in one wheel lets you clean several discs before refilling. It's certainly a big improvement over the manual gadgets, although still plastic, gears and all. (2) It buffs, which seems to do no more than clean, except with dry wheels. (3) It 'repairs' minor scratches - but only those that never seem to affect the playing anyway. Aluminum oxide paste on one wheel did remove some of these inconsequential scratches from a couple of experimental discs. And the discs LOOKED almost like new, I'll admit. (4) For 'major' scratches, which after all are the ones that interfere with playing, there is a hand-held Super Buffer of something like very fine emery cloth. This, plus the cleaning, buffing, and 'repairing,' did improve some major scratches but didn't eliminate them The instructions (which are very badly written) mentioned re-repairing, but even a second time didn't remove these scratches. Circumferential scratches in general have to be removed entirely, or the laser can't track, and this treatment doesn't seem to do the job. Besides the poor instructions, there are sets of wheels to keep changing back and forth (color-codeed for function, although they don't tell you explicitly which is which), and the tube of Cleaning alcohol is stored in the box with the buffing wheels (the cleaning wheels are in a plastic bag, along with the Super Buffer. It's a lot of nitpicky fussing around with small parts, and it gets noisy, too, at some points. All in all, I thought it was a$30 gamble, and I think $10 of it was wasted. ...Fred Hill

Not Sure If It Works |
| Honestly, I don't know if it works. I tried it on an MP3 CD that suddenly stopped playing (there was no obvious damage to the disk). Ran it through the entire system including the procedure for heavy damage 3 times. It did not help. My son, who makes alot of MP3 CD checked it out on some program that he has that tells you if you have bad sections on the CD. It showed that many of the songs were damaged. So I gave up. |

Simply did not fix my CD |
I bought this device to repair a few audio CD's. I followed the instructions VERY carefully. I didn't have any deep scratches, so I figured I was good to go. I can honestly say the cleaning made the CDs worse! Each CD had a song or two that would skip - so I could easily re-create the problem. After cleaning, then buffing - the specific song(s) would hardly even play.
Plus, I have just learned because this thing contains "flammable or toxic gases" - I can't return to this site - I need to contact the manufacturer :(
I'm quite unhappy with this device and believe a bunch of the reviews were seeded by the company.
UPDATE: This site originally would not accept the return and pointed me to the manufacturer. The Manufacturer simply would not take it back because I didn't buy it from them. I sent this site an e-mail pleading my case - they are taking it back and refunding my money. So - the product still didn't work for me - but at least they're taking it back and refunding. |
