All of the good of the theatrical version... and then some. |
It goes without saying that this movie was fantastic to begin with. The classic Tolkien story brought to life, with great special effects, costumes and filmwork. The Platinum Series Special Edition has a substantial amount of added footage, as well as more than one evening's worth of documentaries and "behind the scenes" features by themselves, which are almost all fantastic to see.
Granted, watching an almost FOUR hour film, when all is said and done, is an undertaking in and of itself (which is why I also have the original "shorter" version, a mere ...3 hours). So unless you want to invest the time, you may have the stamina to watch this extended version only once.
If you are a die hard LotR fan, you probably already have this anyway. It's well worth buying, as well as the other two films in the trilogy... |

Great film, uacceptable packaging. |
The film is a ten-star all-time world's-best masterpiece.
I'm giving it only one star because of one reason:
Newline Cinema.
If you put it in your DVD player you're alright...
If you put it in a non-windows DVD-ROM drive on a computer you're all right.
If you put the DVD into your Windows Computer, it will override whatever settings may already be on your computer, install its own "InterActual" player, and then, by default, report on every DVD you watch on your computer back to Newline Cinema...
Newline deserves to be sued over this.
In other news, they've under-payed Peter Jackson by $100m -- and they are being sued over that! |

Visually stunning, but has some bad parts |
| First of all, let me say that I love Tolkien's books, and Jackson has come closer to realizing his vision than anyone ever imagined. Now then, I love this movie, as well as the first two, and let me say that if you haven't bought them yet, you probably should. This is by far the weakest extended cut yet, not to say that it's bad, far from it, but if you're a die-hard Tolkien fan, there are some story gaps missing for you, like the Scouring of The Shire. But, the biggest dissapointment for me was all the excess Eowyn stuff at Pelennor Fields. There are probably at least 5 extra shots of her just crawling around trying to find Merry, when she was only about a foot away from him in the first place! That may not seem so bad in itself, but then she's just laying there, right back where she started, and Eomer runs up yelling, which is a great peice of acting from Karl Urban. Also, some of the editing was a little rough, like Eowyn's hair beig all messed up one second, and then fine the next shot. I'm not trying to knock this movie, I love it, I just want to be fair. Has anyone else noticed that in almost every wide shot in all three movies, regardless of geography, there are mountains in the background? Oh well, it looks cool anyway. The music is superb, as ever, and I also recommend the soundtrack. Oh, and for anyone reading this, I'm not a kid, which is probably obvious(what kid says superb?),but I didn't register. Bottomline: Buy this movie, and go see Jackson's King Kong this December. |
